R@pe charges against actor Mangaliso Ngema withdrawn

Actor Mangaliso Ngema is a free man. This is after the NPA withdrew the rape charges leveled against him by his sister, Queen Ngema, on 19 April.

Taking to his Instagram, the former Generations actor wrote: “Yesterday, the NPA officially withdrew charges against me for a false accusation of rape by a relative of mine. It’s been almost a year of going to court over a malicious and false charge.”

Mangaliso explained that the rape charges have destroyed his brand and career which span over two decades in the film industry.

In addition, the actor made mention of the sexual harassment accusations by his Lithapo co-star, Lorraine Moropa.

“The pain has been real, and I do not wish it on my worst enemy. People have judged and doubted me without knowing the person I am,” he wrote.

Mangaliso added: “All I can say is that as men, we are not safe. As long as you are alive, the same thing can happen to you.

“My gratitude goes to everyone who has believed in me during the toughest times of my life. My legal team, Adv Retha Richards, Marinus Labuscagane, and Louis Nuade, you are the best ever.”

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) South Gauteng spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane confirmed the news to TshisaLive.

“The case was withdrawn after evidence emerged, convincing the prosecution that there were no prospects of a successful prosecution.”

In June 2022, Sunday World reported that former Generations actor Mangaliso Ngema was released on R5 000 bail after appearing at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court for rape.

His sister — who is biologically his cousin as their fathers are siblings — alleged that the actor s.e.xually assaulted her after a miscarriage and whilst his wife was out of the country.

Additionally, she alleged that he had raped her continuously for over two years and had been trying to silence her.

In response to the accusations, Mangaliso claimed that his sister “has been taken over by bad spirits.”

“My sister has not been well since the end of April this year. She was admitted to the hospital for psychotic behavior but she refused psychiatric treatment and absconded from the facility,” his statement read in part.
