Cape Met Gala Showcases Fashion Brilliance And Sustainability
Rugby player Hacjivah Dayimani made a bold fashion statement at the Cape Met Gala on Saturday, blending style and sustainability with a zero-waste up-cycled ensemble. The Stormers flanker donned a unique repurposed vintage denim look, exuding streetwear flair. The outfit, created by Johannesburg-based label Kade, featured a matching patchwork bag and was crafted by designer Skyler Kade Williams using 11 pairs of old jeans. Dayimani, a new father, completed the look with aqua-colored hair and nails, earning a spot on the event’s official best-dressed list.
The Cape Met Gala, held at Kenilworth in Cape Town, attracted a star-studded lineup, including Simphiwe Dana, Zandile “The Black Mermaid” Ndhlovu, Yaya Mavundla, Siv Ngesi, Gareth Cliff, Leanne Manas, and Loyiso with Jennifer Bala. The locale buzzed with sunshine, heat, and scintillating fashion against the backdrop of horse racing.

Dayimani praised designer Skyler Kade Williams, emphasizing the visionary nature of his work. The athlete’s sustainable fashion choice resonated with the environmentally conscious ethos. Dana, acclaimed for the best beauty look of the day, showcased voluminous Afro hair, collaboratively styled by fashion designer Gavin Rajah and visual activist Zanele Muholi.
Zandile Ndhlovu, South Africa’s first black African free-diving instructor, opted for an earthy-toned futuristic corseted dress by Viviers Studio, highlighting the importance of caring for precious resources. The Balas, Loyiso and Jennifer, were crowned the best-dressed couple, with Jennifer donning a vibrant pink gown with exaggerated shoulder details by Pretoria-based design house Erre.
The gala’s theme, “Cape Splendour,” set the stage for local designers such as Rajah, Maze Collective, Ezokhetho, Sipho Mbuto, Stephen van Eeden, Ephymol, Imprint ZA, and Thula Sindi to showcase their fashion brilliance. The event not only celebrated style and creativity but also promoted sustainable and environmentally conscious fashion choices.
