Ntokozo Mbambo Scoops Three SAMAs, Sparking Drama with Kelly Khumalo
The South African Music Awards (SAMAs) stirred up controversy in 2023 as Ntokozo Mbambo clinched three prestigious awards, including Album of The Year and Female Artist of the Year. This victory placed her ahead of notable artists like Hlengiwe Ntombela (HLE) and Kelly Khumalo.
In response to her loss, singer-songwriter Kelly Khumalo expressed her discontent on X (formerly Twitter). Both Khumalo and Mbambo were nominated for Female Artist of The Year. Khumalo boldly proclaimed, “Angenesabi nonke!” asserting that she feared no one. In a fiery post, she stated, “Even Ntokozo knows that numbers don’t lie. We’re not afraid of her. Fuseg Samas.”
The online exchange took an unpleasant turn as Khumalo engaged in insults and, regrettably, made homophobic comments. Later, she offered an apology for the inappropriate remarks.

Undeterred by the controversy, Ntokozo Mbambo maintained her composure and continued with her media engagements as if untouched by the storm surrounding her SAMAs awards. The gospel star took to X on November 21 to express gratitude for the support after winning Album of The Year, Best Contemporary Faith Album, and Female Artist of The Year.
In an interview with eNCA’s Thami Ngubeni, Mbambo shared her peace of mind entering the awards, appreciating the nominations without expecting specific outcomes. Reflecting on her victory, she acknowledged God’s faithfulness, favor, and love.
Comparisons were drawn to a past incident when the late rapper Riky Rick criticized the Metro FM awards. Riky Rick admitted that he sometimes voiced his opinions at inappropriate times, expressing regret for disrespecting relationships with individuals who supported his career. Despite the controversy, he acknowledged that the message, even if sour, was essential.
