eThekwini Municipal Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has visited the family of Mampintsha to offer support and pay respect. The touching images of the visit were shared on the official the eThekwini Municipality page on Facebook where Mayor Kaunda is seen on his knees talking to a grieving Babes Wodumo – real name Bongekile Simelane who sat in mourning.
“Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda accompanied by the leadership of the Cultural and Creative Industries Federation of South Africa visited the home of the late Big NUZ member Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo to offer support and pay respect to Mampintsha who passed away on Saturday.
Mayor Kaunda was accompanied by creatives such as T’zozo, DJ Sox and DJ Tira who discovered Big Nuz and propelled the career of the multi-award-winning group to global stardom.
Big Nuz, a South African Kwaito trio from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal was founded in 2002. The group was composed of three members known by their stage names Mampintsha, Danger and the late R Mashesha who passed away in 2015.
Following R Mashesha’s passing, the group experienced turbulence and eventually, the remaining members went their separate ways to forge their solo careers.
Mampintsha opened West Ink music label which introduced the likes of Babes Wodumo (his wife) and Distruction Boyz to the music scene.
Fast-forward seven years later, the remaining members decided to reunite and create music again.
They released an album titled R Mashesha, which was a tribute to the late member of the group. Their popular hit single Ngeke is currently in the race for Song of the Year 2022.
Mampintsha died after experiencing a minor stroke. His memorial service will be held on Thursday, 29 December, followed by his funeral the next day (Friday, 30 December)
