The body of a woman was found in an open space next to a substation in extension 14 in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni, on Sunday, 19 February.
And the family of Portia Malinga suspects the 49-year-old was strangled.
Residents are now up in arms and have vowed to occupy the piece of land by force if the municipality does not do anything.
Portia’s sister, Sibongile (46), said she communicated with her sister on Saturday, 18 February through WhatsApp.
She said when her sister didn’t get back to her, she thought she might call her the next day. Instead she received a call that her sister was dead.
“It looks like she had been strangled. They are going to pay for what they did.
“I would understand if my sister got sick, but for her to die like this is painful.”
Meanwhile, residents said they’re tired of the municipality not keeping its promises. “They have been promising to use the land, but it has now turned into a killing ground,” said a resident.
Residents claimed several bodies have been found in the field over the years.
“If something is not done, we are going to erect shacks to put it to good use,” said another resident.
Sergeant Lerato Mngomezulu said a murder case was opened, but no one has been arrested yet.
Ekurhuleni Municipality spokesman Zweli Dlamini said they condemn the killing of people in the open space and will speak to Metro cops to increase visibility. “In terms of development of the land, we will check with the relevant department.”
