Gqom star and Big Nuz member Mandla ‘Mampintsha’ Maphumulo died at 40 years on Saturday, 24 December after he was hospitalised due to a stroke last weekend. So, what do we know about Babes Wodumo’s husband?
A source close to the musician told Daily Sun that the producer and Big Nuz founder Mandla ‘Mampintsha’ Maphumulo died on Saturday, 24 December morning. This is after the publication reported this week that the musician, who was married to gqom star Babes Wodumo had a stroke and was admitted to the hospital.
His former manager Dogg Durban confirmed his passing to Daily Sun: “Yes, Mammpitsha is no more.”
His sister Pinki Gumede also told Daily Sun that they were worried about him after his stroke.
“On Saturday, 17 December, we received a phone call informing us to rush to his house. When we arrived there, he looked very sick. His speech was already affected. He told us that he consulted with isangoma and was told he need to do a traditional ceremony.”
1. WHERE WAS MAMPINTSHA BORN
Briefly reports that Mampintsha was born on 18 July 1982 at Umlazi in KwaZulu-Natal and his real name is Mandla Maphumulo. His group Big Nuz received a recording contract from Gallo Records in 2004 and released their first album, Zozo, which did not perform well. They later moved on to DJ Tira’s label Afrotainment and released their next album titled 2nd Round Knockout in 2008. The album was successful and sold 20,000 copies and also won the Metro FM Best Kwaito Award.

He married qgom queen Babes Wodumo in 2021 in a ceremony that was shown on their Showmax reality TV show Uthando Lodumo.

3. HE FOUNDED BIG NUZ
The star broke into fame as part of the trio Big Nuz alongside Danger and R Mashesha, who died in 2015. The talented musician and producer founded the Big Nuz group in 2002, according to Sunday World. The group was made up of Mzi ‘Danger’ Tshomela and the late Sbusiso ‘R Mashesha’ Khoma.

Maphumulo featured his wife Babes Wodumo on her hit gqom track Wololo and was well known for his hit songs such as Joburg and Ngeke. His group Big Nuz released seven albums together and recently made a comeback after the late group member, R Mashesha.
He built a name for himself as a solo artist and started his label West Ink Records which signed his wife and Destruction Boyz.

His relationship with Babes seemed like it was just riddled with trials and tribulations as the couple was seen engaging in numerous fights and family feuds. Cracks in their relationship affected their careers and personal lives, and when they got married and had a child Sponge Wodumo the controversy didn’t stop.
“We are trying to correct all the mistakes. In our career Babes and I made a lot of mistakes and we want to fix that. Not having good publicity has been one of them. We found ourselves showing parts of our lives that were meant to be kept a secret. We did not have good management and publicity,” he tells Drum.
“I have learned that You can’t go far without good PR. We met people and worked with them but fell off or didn’t get along with them. Sometimes we were at fault and sometimes they were the issue. I think that is what we are working on right now in our careers,.”
A few years ago, Babes exposed Mampintsha allegedly being physically abusive when she went live on Instagram and it looked like he was beating her. The video went viral and she opened a case of assault, according to Drum magazine.
