A 29-year-old woman, who allegedly opened a rape case against her ex-boyfriend as part of an extortion attempt, now finds herself behind bars after her case was deferred. The Boitekong police arrested the woman last Sunday, just a day after she lodged the complaint.
The accused claimed that her former boyfriend had raped her on November 25. In response, the family violence, child protection, and sexual offences (FCS) unit initiated an investigation. The investigating officer, as part of the process, took the woman to a medical examination.
However, during the examination, she informed the officer that she had not been raped. Instead, she admitted to filing the case with the intention of extorting money from her ex-boyfriend. Subsequently, a case of perjury was registered, leading to the woman’s arrest.
The woman appeared in court for the first time on Tuesday and has been remanded in custody. Her next court appearance is scheduled for December 18. North West police commissioner Lt-Gen Sello Kwena commended the members for their swift and decisive action against the accused.
