Vybz Kartel In Bad Shape! World Boss Battling Graves’ Disease

Deejay Vybz Kartel, a prominent figure in the dancehall scene since 1993, has faced a turbulent journey marked by both musical success and personal struggles.

Despite his life sentence in prison, Kartel has remained a significant presence in the music world, collaborating with major artists like Rihanna, Missy Elliot, and Jay-Z.

His recent release from prison, however, highlights a different aspect of his life—his ongoing battle with serious health issues.

Kartel was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2014 for the murder of his former associate, Clive “Lizard” Williams, a conviction he consistently claimed was wrongful.

The trial, which lasted 65 days, ended with his conviction just months after he was acquitted of another murder charge. More than a decade later, the Jamaican Court of Appeal has ruled in favor of his release, influenced significantly by his deteriorating health.

Reports from July 31, 2024, indicate that Vybz Kartel and his co-defendants were granted freedom in a unanimous decision by the Jamaica Court of Appeal. This ruling followed the U.K.

Privy Council’s determination that there had been juror misconduct during Kartel’s trial, which rendered his previous conviction questionable. Although a retrial was initially considered, Kartel’s poor health condition has led to the decision to release him without further legal proceedings.

Kartel’s health issues have been a crucial factor in his case. The musician has been battling Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder that causes excessive production of thyroid hormone, leading to symptoms such as bulging and irritated eyes.

This condition, combined with a pre-existing heart condition, has been exacerbated by the harsh conditions of his incarceration, including inadequate air circulation and lack of water.

The defense argued that these conditions, coupled with his untreated Graves’ disease, posed a significant risk to his health, potentially making his situation life-threatening.

A sworn affidavit presented by his defense underscored the severity of his health issues, suggesting that without proper treatment, his conditions could be fatal. The combination of this evidence, alongside discredited witness testimonies and overturned evidence, contributed to the decision to release him.

On the day of his release, Vybz Kartel was greeted by a crowd of supporters, although he appeared with sunglasses and a bandanna, likely to cover symptoms of his Graves’ disease. He was accompanied by his fiancée, marking a new chapter in his life outside the prison walls.

As Vybz Kartel steps into freedom, his ongoing battle with Graves’ disease and heart condition remains a critical concern, reflecting the intersection of his health struggles with his legal battles and musical legacy.
