Popular South African actress Pearl Thusi surprised everyone by apologizing on Instagram early this morning for having previously defended Chidimma Adetshina, a former Miss SA finalist who is being accused of identity theft and fraud.
Adetshina, a top-10 candidate in the Miss South Africa 2021 competition, has been embroiled in a scandal following the revelation that she had been unlawfully receiving social grant cash meant for impoverished South Africans.

At first, Thusi had defended Adetshina, calling out those who were “quick to judge” the former pageant competitor.
But Thusi admitted in her late-night Instagram post that her earlier position was incorrect.
The actress wrote, “I erred in supporting Chidimma’s actions.”
“Fraud and identity theft are serious crimes that hurt vulnerable people, and I should not have tried to excuse that behavior.”
Thusi went on to state that she was aware of the seriousness of the issue, but that she had been “blinded by [her] personal relationship” with Adetshina.
“I apologize unreservedly, and I hope that Chidimma will take responsibility for her crimes and make amends,” she said.

The incident has shocked the people of South Africa, who are outraged that a pageant finalist would allegedly take advantage of the social aid system in their country.
The investigation into Adetshina’s conduct is still underway, according to the authorities, and more charges could be brought soon.
Social media users have responded differently to Thusi’s about-face on the matter;
“In my opinion, not withstanding the fact that another part of me disagrees,but in this very awkward and embarrassing instance, it is very much sufficient, and without my prior fear of contradiction,take a solid stance and allow me to say voetsek.”
“We have already canceled her, no need for the apology.”
“Cowardly, she knew people will come for her.”
