Mkhize confirms SA has surpassed 50 000 cases, 1 000 deaths

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has confirmed another surge in Covid-19 infections.

In a statement issued by the Health Ministry on Monday, Mkhize commented that: “As of today, the cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa is 50 879.”

Reporting another increase in the number of fatalities, Mkhize continued to say that:

“Regrettably, we report a further 82 COVID-19 related deaths: 55 from Western Cape, 26 from the Eastern Cape, and 1 from KZN. This brings the total national deaths to 1080 with a mortality rate of 2,1%. We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who treated the deceased. The recoveries to date are 26 099– this translates to a recovery rate of 51,3%.”

“Over the coming weeks, as we watch the coronavirus infections continue to rise, we must remember that we are not helpless. And we should remember one simple, but a fundamental, message: Don’t be alarmed. Be prepared.”
