With the selection of Khanyisa Chawane as the SPAR Proteas’ new captain, Netball South Africa has announced an exciting new chapter for the team.

Leading the team with distinction from 2016 to 2023, Bongi Msomi was replaced by Chawane, whose tenure is a momentous occasion in South African netball history.

She regularly shown remarkable talent and sportsmanship on international platforms, and her skill and expertise were crucial in presenting South Africa.

“I am truly humbled and honoured to be appointed captain of the SPAR Proteas,” Chawane stated, embodying the spirit and dedication she expects from her teammates.

“It’s a privilege to lead such a talented and dedicated group of players. I’m excited to take on this new challenge and work with the coaches and teammates to achieve our goals.

I’m committed to leading by example, with passion, integrity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. I’m looking forward to this new chapter and making South Africa proud.”

Chawane’s selection is evidence of her dedication to the sport and her hard effort. As the most-capped player in the team’s history, Bongi Msomi, her predecessor, leaves a tremendous legacy.

He led South Africa to victory in both the Liverpool 2019 Netball World Cup and the Cape Town 2023 tournament.

The president of Netball South Africa, Cecilia Molokwane, celebrated Chawane’s appointment and expressed faith in her ability as a leader. “Khanyisa deserves congratulations for her well-earned appointment.

Molokwane confirmed, “Her outstanding leadership qualities, outstanding playing abilities, and dedication make her an impeccable choice for this crucial role.”

“I always say, ‘When you want a job done, send a woman and it shall be done!'” she joked in her note.
