Johannesburg Water has reported a steady recovery in its water supply infrastructure after experiencing significant strain. The utility announced that 11 of its systems across the city have successfully recovered, though some areas remain under pressure.
Despite these improvements, Johannesburg Water noted that certain regions are still experiencing reduced tower and reservoir levels. This has led to instances of low water pressure and, in some cases, a complete loss of supply.
Areas that have seen substantial recovery following multiple maintenance shutdowns include Linden 2, Waterval, Quellerina, Kensington B, Helderkruin, Honeydew, Glenvista, and Randpark Ridge.
However, some areas continue to struggle with water supply issues. Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala confirmed that they are actively monitoring affected systems and areas still facing water shortages.
“These include Crosby, Brixton, Hursthill, Crown Gardens, Eagles Nest, Berea, Forest Hill, Lenasia, South Hills, and Parktown,” Shabalala stated.
To address the ongoing challenges, technical teams from the bulk supplier Rand Water are working in collaboration with Johannesburg Water to restore service in the affected regions.
Last week, Rand Water issued a public appeal to residents of Johannesburg and Tshwane, urging them to reduce water consumption to prevent a complete system collapse.
Despite Rand Water operating at full capacity, demand has consistently outpaced supply, particularly in the two metropolitan areas where water usage has been steadily increasing.
Johannesburg Water continues to monitor the situation closely and urges residents to use water sparingly to ensure long-term sustainability of the system.
