Commenting on the decision, Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi revealed that the government had no intention to oppose the bid.
Lesufi explained that the department’s lawyers have been instructed to negotiate the amount instead:
“We have allowed our legal team to continue to engage with the legal team representing the family so that we use previous court cases that have ruled on matters of this nature as a barometer to determine the appropriate amount.”
Lesufi’s department had probed the incident, finding that the school principal, teachers, camp facilitators and school governing body had been negligent.
Ian Levitt, the lawyer representing the family, said that they are willing to meet with the government:
“The MEC and his attorneys are very welcomed to contact us at any time. However, we won’t wait for any engagement with the MEC or the minister (of basic education). The law must take its cause.”
Take a look at a few reactions from South Africans to this decision below:
Victor Godfree Nkuna- “This is a personal matter, should be settled out of court. The government must just compensate them with R1 million then say Goodbye to them.”
Amahle Annika- “R10 million is way too much, is He buying a private jet.”
