‘Fellow South Africans’ How To Get Free Electricity In Lockdown

The South African government has stepped up its mandate to help and protect all its citizens. The lockdown has hit many people hard in the pockets and with the introduction on a five-level program, it looks like there is no end in sight to when life returns to normal if it ever does.

Many households are grappling for human basics like water and electricity. The costs seem to be getting more expensive for many who have now found themselves in the dark.

However, the government does have a program to provide free electricity to households in easy steps and without breaking the law.

Free basic municipal services are services provided at no charge by the Government to poor households. The services currently include water and electricity.

These services are provided by municipalities and include a minimum amount of electricity, water and sanitation that is sufficient to cater for the basic needs of a poor household.

Free Basic Electricity of 50kWh per household per month for a grid-energy system (connected through the national electrification programme) is provided.

This amount of electricity will be enough to provide basic lighting, basic water heating using a kettle, basic ironing and a small black and white TV and radio.

To see if you qualify for the free electricity, follow the steps below

You can claim your FBE token by dialing *130*269#

Select Option 2 for Free Basic Electricity

Select Option 5 for new meter number entry

Enter Your meter number

You will receive an SMS with you allocated free electricity units

You can only use the service once a month.

It is important to note that free basic electricity is exclusively available for needy households. Therefore, respective municipalities assess all applications to determine whether a household meets the specifications to qualify for free services or not. As each municipality determines its category of subsidies, some qualify for 100% subsidies while others qualify for less.
