A family in the Eastern Cape is mourning the loss of Xolani Xaka, a 32-year-old member of the LGBTIQ+ community, who tragically lost his life outside his home.
According to Xolani’s cousin and family spokesperson, Zukiswa Veto, Xolani was open about his sexual identity with both his family and community.
On Sunday, 18 August, around 18:00, Xolani heard a noise at the gate of the house he shared with his uncle in Zwide, Gqeberha. It is reported that he may have been called to the gate.
When he went to investigate, he encountered three individuals who attacked him. Xolani called out to his uncle, who attempted to intervene but was threatened by the assailants.

His uncle retreated indoors, and the perpetrators fled shortly after. Unfortunately, Xolani succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
According to his Facebook profile, Xolani was a fan of Beyoncé and had studied Marketing and Management, though Veto mentioned he was unemployed at the time of his passing.
While the motive for the attack remains unclear, it does not appear to have been a robbery. Some activists suspect that the incident could be related to hate-based violence.
Ayanda Mgwadleka, Site Coordinator of OUT’s Engage Men’s Health project in Nelson Mandela Bay, expressed deep sorrow over Xolani’s death, describing him as a valued client and a beloved member of the local LGBTIQ+ community.
“LGBTIQ+ individuals should not have to live in fear of discrimination or harm due to their identity,” said Sibonelo Ncanana, OUT’s Civil Society Engagement Officer. “We urge the authorities to swiftly apprehend and prosecute those responsible.”
OUT is providing psychosocial support to Xolani’s uncle and assisting with funeral costs. The funeral is scheduled for 7 September. The organization also extended its condolences to Xolani’s family, friends, and everyone affected by his loss.
