South Africa has broken a new record with the number of daily Covid-19 infections. zanewsonline.co.za explores the latest updates on the pandemic.

1. New record as SA hits 8 124 new Covid-19 cases

Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize has confirmed that SA has hit a record spike in Covid-19 cases:

“As of today, the cumulative number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in South Africa is 159 333 with 8 124 new cases reported.”
In addition to the drastic increase in infections, Mkhize confirmed a high number of fatalities:

“Regrettably, we report a further 92 Covid-19 related deaths – 17 from Eastern Cape, 28 from Gauteng, 10 from KwaZulu-Natal and 37 from Western Cape. This brings the total deaths to 2 749.

We wish to express our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased.”

2. ConCourt dismisses DA’s bid to declare Disaster Management Act unlawful

The Constitutional Court has dismissed the Democratic Alliance’s legal bid to had the Disaster Management Act declared unconstitutional.

The opposition party had insisted that the act gave Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma too much power.

In a judgment handed down for the court, it was ruled that hearing the cases wouldn’t be in the interest of justice:

“It has concluded that the application should be dismissed as it is not in the interests of justice to hear it at this stage. The Court has decided not to award costs.”

The DA argued that its application had raised key questions on the separation of powers between Parliament and the executive:

“The nation is living through extraordinary times, and the executive’s response to the pandemic, making use of Section 27 of the Act, raises urgent issues of profound constitutional importance about whether that section is constitutionally compliant.”

3. Gauteng headed towards peak infections

The number of Covid-19 infections is drastically rising in Gauteng with the province recording 45 944 cases and 244 deaths.

Minister Mkhize recently revealed that a ‘storm’ is approaching and the Gauteng province is set to overtake the Western Cape as the region with the highest number of cases.

Quarantine sites are currently being prepared to handle the surge of infections in the province.
