JOHANNESBURG – Police responded to a domestic violence call in Bramley, finding 32-year-old Dorcas Lekganyane dead in a house. Lekganyane, an influential environmental scientist recognized by the Mail & Guardian in June as one of 200 notable South Africans, was discovered with multiple stab wounds.
The police have detained the boyfriend of Dorcas Lekganyane following her death. Authorities found Lekganyane at a Bramley residence on Thursday after responding to a domestic violence incident.
Lekganyane was honored by the Mail & Guardian in June for her contributions, being named one of the 200 influential young South Africans. Tragically, just weeks later, she was allegedly killed by her boyfriend, an act her family described as “senseless violence.”
Gauteng police spokesperson Noxolo Kweza confirmed the murder investigation. “Her partner was also at the scene and was taken to a local hospital under police guard. He will face murder charges and appear in court soon.”
Lekganyane’s family issued a statement remembering her as a beacon of light whose death will be mourned by the many lives she touched through her work and compassion.
