Boyfriend & ‘Prophetess’ Captured

A 27-year-old suspected dating scammer and his 32-year-old accomplice are set to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court following their recent arrest.

The Hawks disclosed that in September, the woman encountered the 27-year-old man in Polokwane, driving a white Mercedes-Benz.

The two began dating, with the victim sharing her personal problems.

The boyfriend promised to introduce her to a ‘prophetess’ who could supposedly resolve her issues.

After engaging in prayers and being shown R4 million, the victim paid R650,000, which she borrowed, only to find the ‘prophetess’ and boyfriend unresponsive later.

The Hawks seized two vehicles associated with the suspects.

After tracking down another Mercedes-Benz in Potchefstroom, both suspects were arrested on December 12.

The Hawks are investigating several dating scams across the province.

Last month, the Hawks in Limpopo issued a warning to South African women due to a “rapid increase of dating scam incidents” recorded in the province.

The alert followed an incident where a 60-year-old Polokwane-based woman lost over R800,000 of her pension money to a boyfriend who disappeared.

The victim, a teacher employed by the Department of Education in Limpopo, met the man at a shopping complex earlier in the year.

The scammer proposed love, and as the victim awaited her pension payout, she visited his rented house in Ivy Park, Polokwane.

The scammer convinced her of a fortune awaiting her, leading her to pay over R800,000 before growing suspicious.
