Alcohol-related hospital admissions increase in Western Cape

Days into the lifting of the lockdown booze ban and already Western Cape hospitals are seeing an increase in the number of alcohol-related admissions. The province’s head of health Dr. Keith Cloete says trauma and emergency wards are feeling the impact.

Health authorities say while it will take a week to gather accurate statics, reported cases so far show an increase in alcohol-related admissions. Authorities are calling for people to drink responsibly. Meanwhile, the Cape Town International Convention Centre — which has been converted into a field hospital — will open its doors on Friday.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to visit Cape Town to assess the Western Cape’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The province currently accounts for more than 60 percent of infections. Ramaphosa will be accompanied by Premier Alan Winde.
